Hair colour is all the rage these days with people flaunting platinum, pink, or both. There’s nothing stopping you from dye your hair green if you wanted to. However, colouring your hair comes with a price. Not only is it another expense when you go to a salon but it can also be harmful to your scalp.

Artificial dyes are made from a wide range of chemicals. Although dyes wouldn’t be in the market if it weren’t approved and safe, there are chemical reactions in your body that you will not notice. Your scalp doesn’t have to itch for there to be harmful effects on your health.

1. Go to a Salon

Even if DIY is a lot cheaper, there are certain risks you face when you dye your hair alone. For one thing, your hair stylist knows more about hair products than you.

This means that they can advise you on the strength of the days and they can also apply it properly. Plus, they will know exactly how long a dye should be placed on your head before rinsing it off.

2. Look At The Dye’s Label

The label will tell you if the product is all-natural or artificial. Even if artificial hair dyes are already made available, you should exercise caution by checking the label. If you are allergic to a certain chemical, then reading the ingredients will add a layer of safety before applying the dye.

3. Opt For Natural Hair Dyes

One of the best things you can do for a safer way of colouring your hair is using natural dyes. Natural dyes are not made from any chemicals and they are usually plant-based.

Henna dyes are the best option because they are plant-based. They are also non-toxic. You can also look for salons that advocate the use of all-natural hair products.

4. Avoid Changing Colour Every Season

Nowadays, changing hair colours is as easy as changing your nail polish. If you want to take care of your hair, you should avoid changing colour every month (or even every other month).

The more chemicals you put on your hair, the more it will damage your scalp. Eventually, too much styling and bleaching will result to dry and frizzy hair.

5. Take A Skin Test

This is an oldie but a goodie test to see if you are allergic to anything in the dye. All you have to do is place a pea-sized amount of the dye on the inner side of your wrist. Wait for a few minutes. If there is a reaction, then you are allergic to the dye or something in it. If there is none, then it is safe to use on your hair.

If you really want to dye your hair, make sure that you go through the right phases and timelines in changing from one colour to another. Gradually change your colour over a span of a few weeks for your hair to slowly prepare for a drastic change in colour.
